My Nursing Mission Statement

My mission is to provide holistic and patient-centred care by demonstrating effective collaboration and lifelong learning to uphold my competency. I will embrace honesty, altruism, and professionalism in my practice to accomplish this. Furthermore, I will remain receptive to new ideas that will impact my interactions with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare providers.

Holistic care and patient-centeredness will impact my practice. To begin with, I will endeavour to fulfil the unique needs of my patients. Healthcare should not only focus on the patient’s physical needs but also on psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and economic needs (Frisch & Rabinowitsch, 2019). Holistic care should be prioritized because it increases the quality of patient care. This is because it builds a good therapeutic relationship, optimizes information sharing, and promotes the development of individualized care plans. Secondly, I will engage in the advocacy for patient-centeredness in the workplace. I will participate in the formulation of organizational policies that advocate patient-centeredness. Furthermore, I will engage patients by offering periodic surveys to determine their satisfaction levels with holistic care offered at the healthcare facility. Thirdly, holistic care and patient-centeredness will enable me to uphold nursing ethics and cultural congruence. Cultural congruence directs healthcare providers to acknowledge and respect the cultural practices of other colleagues and patients (Brooks et al., 2019). This can be achieved by avoiding language barriers and engaging different professionals, such as spiritual leaders, in patient care. Nursing ethics promoting patient-centeredness are justice, autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence.

Effective collaboration will impact my current and future practice. I will develop various skills to effectively collaborate with my colleagues, interdisciplinary team members, and patients. Firstly, I will improve my interpersonal skills. I will optimize my communication skills to allow information sharing, create a professional and therapeutic rapport, and avoid conflict and confusion. Therapeutic communication will play a key role in my interactions with patients. Also, therapeutic communication will offset patients’ emotional baggage and guide and increase the likelihood of collaboration (Xue & Heffernan, 2021). It embraces various strategies, such as empathy and active listening, that promote patient and family engagement (Xue & Heffernan, 2021). Secondly, I will leverage health technology to promote collaboration. For instance, I will champion implementing telehealth technology to promote collaboration between healthcare providers and patients (Bitar & Alismail, 2021). Overall, effective collaboration will improve the quality of healthcare services by promoting interdisciplinary decision-making regarding patient care.

Moreover, lifelong learning increases healthcare providers’ knowledge, skills, and competency. To achieve lifelong learning, I will engage in various activities. To begin with, I will engage in research to address various shortcomings in the healthcare facility. Engaging in research will enable me to learn and apply the principles of evidence-based practice. Researching will enable me to access current information necessary to develop my knowledge and skills. Also, research will enable me to publish peer-reviewed articles in reputable journals. Publishing promotes learning because the information is disseminated to the general population. Furthermore, I will organize and participate in periodic training sessions. These sessions will aim at imparting new skills and knowledge to nurse practitioners and other healthcare providers. To allow flexibility in learning, I will leverage health technology. For instance, videoconferencing allows real-time interactions and eliminates the need for in-person training sessions (Bitar & Alismail, 2021). Training and education will improve digital literacy to promote the effective use of technology to enhance learning.
